Here’s the uncomfortable truth: most business owners think their website is “fine.” It’s got their phone number. It lists their services. It has a nice photo of the team.
But “fine” doesn’t generate leads. “Fine” doesn’t compete. And in most cases, “fine” is actively losing customers. You just can’t see it because you don’t know what you’re missing.
After auditing hundreds of service business websites, these are the 5 issues we see over and over again.
1. It Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load
This is the silent killer. Your site looks great on your office computer with fast WiFi. But your customer is sitting in their house with a broken AC unit, searching on their phone over cellular data.
If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, 53% of visitors leave before they see a single word. They bounce straight to your competitor’s faster site.
Quick test:
Go to Google PageSpeed Insights and run your URL. If your mobile score is under 70, you have a serious problem.
Common culprits:
- Unoptimized images (the #1 offender)
- Cheap shared hosting
- Too many plugins (WordPress sites)
- No caching configured
- Render-blocking scripts
2. There’s No Clear Call-to-Action Above the Fold
When someone lands on your homepage, they should know within 3 seconds:
- What you do
- Where you do it
- What to do next
If the first thing they see is a stock photo slideshow with vague text like “Quality Service Since 1985,” you’ve already lost them.
What works: A clear headline stating your primary service and location, a subheadline with your value proposition, and a prominent button or phone number. That’s it.
The goal isn’t to tell them everything. It’s to give them enough confidence to take the next step.
3. Your Site Isn’t Mobile-First
Check your Google Analytics right now. We guarantee 55-70% of your traffic is mobile. If your site was designed on a desktop and then “made responsive” as an afterthought, the mobile experience is going to be rough.
Signs of a bad mobile experience:
- Text too small to read without zooming
- Buttons too close together (fat-finger problem)
- Horizontal scrolling on any page
- Phone number isn’t tap-to-call
- Forms that are painful to fill out on a phone
- Images that blow out the viewport
Google has been using mobile-first indexing since 2019. That means Google judges your site based on the mobile version, not the desktop version. A beautiful desktop site with a mediocre mobile experience will rank poorly.
4. You Don’t Have Individual Service Pages
This is the biggest SEO mistake we see with service businesses. You have one “Services” page that lists everything you do in bullet points.
That’s like having one employee handle every call, every estimate, every install, and every follow-up. It doesn’t work.
Each service needs its own page. Here’s why:
- Google can’t rank a single page for dozens of different keywords
- Customers searching for “water heater installation” won’t click a generic “services” result
- Individual pages let you speak directly to the customer’s specific problem
- More pages = more opportunities to rank = more entry points to your site
An HVAC company should have separate pages for: AC repair, AC installation, heating repair, furnace installation, ductwork, maintenance plans, indoor air quality, and so on. Each one targeting specific keywords.
5. There’s No Social Proof Visible
People don’t trust businesses. They trust other people’s experiences with businesses. If your website doesn’t prominently display reviews, testimonials, and proof of results, you’re asking visitors to take a leap of faith.
And they won’t.
What effective social proof looks like:
- Google review widget on the homepage showing your rating and recent reviews
- Testimonial quotes strategically placed near calls-to-action
- Before/after galleries of completed work
- Trust badges: BBB, industry certifications, insurance logos
- Review count: “Join 200+ satisfied customers” is more powerful than any headline you’ll write
The psychology is simple. When someone is about to call a contractor, they want reassurance. They want to know other people have had a good experience. Make that evidence impossible to miss.
What to Do About It
Here’s the action plan:
- Run a PageSpeed test today. If you’re under 70 on mobile, that’s priority #1.
- Look at your homepage on your phone. Is the CTA obvious? Can you call with one tap?
- Count your service pages. If you have fewer pages than services, you’re leaving rankings on the table.
- Google your business. Do your reviews show up on your site? If not, add them.
- Check your analytics. If you don’t have analytics set up, that’s actually the first thing to fix.
